There are several very informative books about Oppositional Defiant Disorder as
well as parenting in general. The following books have been read by many, and reader comments are included where available.
(Please contact me if you would like have your thoughts and comments included. I love feedback!)
THE EXPLOSIVE
CHILD BY DR. ROSS GREENE. (This is the most recommended book on the ODD-Board.)

WINNING
COOPERATION FROM YOUR CHILD! (A Comprehensive Method to Stop Defiant & Aggresstive Behavior in Children) BY KENNETH WENNING,
Ph.D.
** This is my personal favorite book on the subject and a must-read for any parent of an ODD Child.
The book spends time focusing on the PARENT and what changes the parent needs to make (on attitudes and reactions) with the
underlying theme being that the parents must change FIRST before the child can change. It then gives practical advice to help
the child, and improve the parent-child relationship overall. This was more than an addition to my library. It is my bible!

THE DEFIANT CHILD (A Parent's
Guide to Oppositional Defiant Disorder) BY DR. DOUGLAS A. RILEY

MEETING
THE CHALLENGE (Using Love and Logic to help children develop attention and behavior skills) BY JIM FAY, FOSTER W. CLINE, BOB
SORENSON (OF THE LOVE & LOGIC INSTITUTE)
** This book is not ODD-specific, nor was it developed for ODD
in particular, but for any child with behavioral challenges. The authors basically are using the same philosphy as in all
of the Love & Logic series, with certain directions for challenging children. What I like about this book is that is treats
ALL children the same, and acts as though challenging children can benefit from parenting styles similar to "normal" children.

THE
CHALLENGING CHILD (Understanding, Raising and Enjoying the Five "Difficult" Types of Children) BY STANLEY I. GREENSPAN, M.D.

POSITIVE DISCIPLINE BY JANE NELSEN, Ed.D.

COMMON SENSE PARENTING:
A PROVEN STEP-BY-STEP GUID FOR RAISING RESPONSIBLE KIDS AND CREATING HAPPY FAMILIES BY BURKE, etal
** It
is not specifically for ODD, but has so many clear, easy (and well, just common sense) ideas. For parents who are frazzled,
I think it is a great handbook with useful ideas, not just ideas alone. ... Stephanie

YOUR DEFIANT CHILD (8 STEPS TO BETTER BEHAVIOR) by Russell A. Barkley
** ... has changed the way in which I handle my son's behaviors. How dumb
can I be that he acts the way he does because I've taught him to react that way. I never knew I had made such a negative
impression on him. But now I know the wrongs I did, and I pray it is not too late to fix it. .... Joyce

CHILDREN WHO SAY NO WHEN YOU WANT THEM TO SAY YES by James Windell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HIS BRIGHT LIGHT ... THE NICK TRAINA STORY by Danielle Steele.
** This is a "must read" for any parent of a child with
problems. Nick suffered from manic-depression most of his life, although was not diagnosed until his teens. He
eventually took his own life (at age 19) ... and although tragic, Danielle Steele does a wonderful job of honoring her son
as well as to show others the potential results of this disease. The underlying message, for me, was "never give up
on your child" ... If you feel your child has a problem, keep searching for answers and help. Keep handy a box of Kleenex
... but you'll hold your child ever closer after reading this wonderful tribute. Nancy
1-2-3 Magic by Thomas Phelan
**1-2-3 Magic is not a book for ODD, but it seems to be helpful
for us. The examples used in the book are real life situations.......unlike some other books I have read. Margaret
DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF (and it's all small stuff) by Richard Carlson
** Great read for parents of ODD kids ... really helps keep it all in perspective.
DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP ME TO BE LOVED BY MY KIDS by Drs. Jordan and Margaret Paul
*** I highly recommend this book to any parent who has ever endured those horrible ugly power battles. I decided to
refuse to get locked into them anymore and its saved my sanity and our home life is peaceful (well mostly.) ... Knowledge
IS power and after reading this (especially pages 57 on) you will feel much
better in dealing with your children.
