I will do my best to post updated information about ODD from reseach I conduct and information I obtain. I hope to be able
to condense these details so that other parents can learn more about this disorder, and not feel so alone.
First, some background: I live in sunny Florida with my husband, Bill and our children, Kevin and Kelli. My son, Kevin,
was diagnosed with ODD when he was 4 1/2. We were told he was ODD-alone which was rare, and to anticipate additional problems
down the road (as this disorder often accompanies another, such as ADD, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, etc.) We spent 4 years trying
various behavior modification techniques. At age 8, things with Kevin became progressively worse ... There was much rage
and anger in his life, he was physically and verbally abusive (yes, with his parents!), and basically not pleasant to be around.
Our home life became quite difficult. While we had been avoiding medication (as we were told that ODD by itself really isn't
medically treatable), we realized we needed help. At this time, we are using a combination of pharmacology and therapy
to help our son and our family. It's been a long road so far, with our journey really only beginning. I hope to
learn as much as I can about Oppositional Defiant Disorder (and related behavioral challenges) in order to help my son and
our family. In this quest, I hope to be able to offer help to others as well.
God bless you all. Nancy
